I have the same kind of problem on ubuntu 8.04 with amule from repository (2.2.0~svn20080218-0ubuntu4).
The system has 512 MB of RAM and it is often stuck and does not respond when I use aMule. At these moments, I can see that aMule consumes all the memory (in the system monitor of Gnome), and the hard-disk swaps continuously.

2.2.0~svn20080218-0ubuntu4 is not supported. Please use current version 2.2.3.
