Summary | 0000343: Need for an intermediate release
Description | Hello. I'd like to complain about amule's release planning. The problem is not that the final version takes so long to be released ("things are done when they're done") but the functionality gaps in time that are left between releases. What I mean is, what's the problem with taking a stable CVS shot and releasing it as -rc9? Doest it cost money? Who takes into consideration the amount of users who are getting killed in desperation with the -rc8? It's not about minor changes, minor bugfixes. I'm talking about, for example, the Mac users who are severely coitus interrupting with rc8. This also applies to Linux users who just feel the pain of rc8 crashes. And please, compiling a CVS is not an answer for a Mac user neither for the average Linux-rpm-user. What's the problem with releasing an extra mid-development release before the final version? When I moved to Linux they told me free software was about quick fixing the bugs/quick releasing the bugfixes. And this was true, I checked www.kernel.org and I saw it. It was true. Today, nobody would understand that Linus Torvalds would take 3 months between releases, specially when they're severe bug fixes. And there you got it: 2.6.11.6! And it's pretty easy to get one of this kernels in deb binary format. So please, my request is: don't leave those big gaps in time, especially when there are severe functionality fixes that people need badly. CVS isn't an answer for everybody. Pleases, release more RC's if needed. It doesn't hurt. It doesn't kill. It doesn't cost money. It just helps users. Regards.
